Alvaro Salazar is a New York based fashion editor and stylist, with over 20 years’ experience working with top publications including Vogue, Esquire, and The New York Times.

After moving to New York from Costa Rica, I began my career working for Esquire Magazine, while over the course of my career transitioned to the New York Times, Ralph Lauren, followed by Vogue.

I had the fortune of becoming part of the launch of Men’s Vogue, working on the team directly under editor-in-chief Jay Fieldman and Anna Wintour in conceptualizing, creating, and launching the first issue of the publication.  As the Style Editor for Men’s Vogue, I was responsible for styling and art directing fashion editorials featuring a variety of visionary a-list talent spanning across entertainment, arts, politics, and sport in domestic and international locations.  While at Conde Nast, I simultaneously styled for American Vogue Magazine.  After the last issue of Men’s Vogue, I spent time in Brazil where I freelanced for Vogue international editions, as well as local Brazilian fashion brands and publications.

I am fascinated in luxury designs which extend beyond fashion. Aside from fashion styling, I have enjoyed working on conceptual and design development for new collections and physical spaces.  I am moved by the textures of fabrics and materials, the details of silhouettes, and the importance of quality.  Modern innovative interiors of homes and physical spaces are what inspire me.  For me finding simple elements in construction and quality of materials make all the difference in a successful look.

I believe that what we choose to surround ourselves with is a reflection of who we are as a person.  The clothing we put on our bodies, as well as the homes in which we live, are a manifestation of our individualism.  Clothing should accentuate positive attributes, complimenting one’s own specific body type in order to express individuality, and show the best version of oneself.  Our homes serve the same function in distinguishing one’s sense of self.

Other notable publications and brands I have worked for include L’Officiel, Vogue BR, GQ, Oprah, Vogue Homme, Nylon Magazine, Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney, Hugo Boss, Hickey Freedman, Judith Leiber, Oscar De La Renta, Perry, Ellis, Carolina Herrera, and Escada.

I worked alongside notable fashion photographers such as David Bailey, Norman Jean Roy, Phil Poynter, Richard Phibbs, Raymond Meier, Paul Jasmin, Matthias Vriens, Antunes Wilde, Matthew Brookes, Max Vadukul, Walter Chin, KT Auleta, and Tom Munro.
